Do You Qualify for MAIF? (It’s Easier Than You Think)

You might think you don’t qualify because of a DUI, a suspension, or too many tickets. But MAIF has clear rules. You are eligible if:

  • You live in Maryland and have a valid MD driver’s license or vehicle registration.
  • You’ve been turned down twice. You must show that at least two private insurance companies rejected you* (for any reason other than nonpayment of your bill).
  • You were dropped. If a private insurer canceled or refused to renew your policy (again, not because you missed a payment), you automatically qualify.
  • You don’t owe MAIF money. You cannot have any unpaid premiums from a previous MAIF policy.

*Clearly stated in the Maryland State Archives records.

What Does MAIF Actually Cover?

To drive legally in Maryland, you must carry specific limits. MAIF covers these state-required minimums, known as 30/60/15:

  • $30,000 for bodily injury per person.
  • $60,000 for bodily injury per accident (if multiple people are hurt).
  • $15,000 for property damage.

Beyond the minimum:

Unlike the “bare bones” providers, MAIF also lets you add Full Coverage (Comprehensive and Collision) to protect your actual vehicle. If you have a car loan or lease, your bank will likely require this. Ask us about adding Rental Reimbursement or Roadside Assistance.

How the MAIF Payment Plan Works (18% Down)

Worried about paying a huge lump sum? MAIF now offers a dedicated Installment Plan to help high-risk drivers budget more effectively.

  • Lower Down Payment: You only pay 18% of the total annual premium upfront.
  • Monthly Payments: You pay the rest in 9 monthly installments.
  • First Payment Due Date: You get a 45-day break before the first monthly payment is due.
  • Pay in Full Discount: If you can pay for the whole year at once, you save 8%.

Leaving MAIF: How to Get Standard Insurance Again

MAIF is your safety net, not a life sentence. Most drivers use MAIF to get back on their feet. As soon as your driving record clears up (usually 3 years without an accident or ticket), you can switch to a standard, low-cost carrier.

Because GEBCO is a broker, we will automatically shop for standard insurance for you once you are eligible. We want to save you money, even if it means moving you out of MAIF.
